As a sentence in Reception this would be celebrated, as the child has used the sounds they know to write the words They have not yet learned the ‘sion’ sound, that after w the a sound is written with an o, the tch sound…… We want children keen to write, not put off by ‘getting it wrong’!

Fred talk • Fred is a puppet who can only speak in Fred talk ( in sounds) • Children are taught to Fred talk words to read them and also to ‘Fred in your head’ to work them out Special Friends • These are sounds which are two letters, one sound eg ch, th, sh, ee, ai • These are underlined for children to spot them easily in words

My turn your turn – children copy what the adult says, done with hand signals Alien words – we read these daily to ensure children’s phonics skills are embedded and that children are using their phonic skills to read words and not just recognising or remembering the words

Once the children are confident at reading and writing words with set one sounds, they will move on to set two (usually after Christmas). After this, they will move onto set three sounds – either Reception or Year One. Children learn the alternative spellings, for example that the ee sound can be written ee, ea, y on the end, e on the end, split diagraph e-e. All the alternative spellings can be seen on the complex speed chart. Red words – these are tricky words which can’t be sounded out eg the, to, go, no (many words become ‘untricky’ when children learn more sounds) children need to learn to recognise them on sight and spell them
