Once the children are confident at reading and writing words with set one sounds,

Once the children are confident at reading and writing words with set one sounds, they will move on to set two (usually after Christmas). After this, they will move onto set three sounds – either Reception or Year One. Children learn the alternative spellings, for example that the ee sound can be written ee, ea, y on the end, e on the end, split diagraph e-e. All the alternative spellings can be seen on the complex speed chart. Red words – these are tricky words which can’t be sounded out eg the, to, go, no (many words become ‘untricky’ when children learn more sounds) children need to learn to recognise them on sight and spell them
