Why RWI? Read Write Inc. programmes work because we get children’s brain ‘COGS’ working: Everything CONNECTS: children connect sounds with mnemonic pictures; words with their meanings; and stories with the sounds they know. They connect their own experiences to the stories they read and learn to lift the words off the page. Children learn ONE thing at a time and practise it until it becomes second nature. Interactive practice keeps children focused, and their capacity to learn develops exponentially. They learn at their GOLDILOCKS spot (not too easy, not too hard) with others at a similar challenge level. No time is wasted.

Key Principles Phonics allows children to recognise the individual sounds in a word. The word can be segmented into individual sounds, eg. cat becomes c - a - t The sounds can be blended and the child can read the word, eg. c - a - t becomes cat. Sounds can be formed from one letter, two letters (digraphs), three letters (trigraphs), two split letters (split digraphs).

RWI Approaches Assess the children initially to establish groups if relevant to the setting.

RWI Approaches Assess the children initially to establish groups if relevant to the setting. Repeat assessment half termly and re-group where necessary. Work through the sounds quickly and carefully, following the order outlined by RWI. Speed sounds (most common sounds) are taught in a specific order. Set 1 ~ Set 2 ~ Set 3 44 sounds. Activities are short, active and fun. Repetition NO hands up MTYT (my turn your turn)
