STATION ONE Breaking down Chapter One Analyze the dinner party in chapter one (Starting on page 10 with “The only completely stationary object in the room was an enormous couch on which two young women were buoyed up as though upon an anchored balloon. ” Ending on page 21 with “…as if she had asserted her membership in a rather distinguished secret society to which she and Tom belonged”). Within this section of the text, break it down into four smaller sections. To help decide on the smaller sections, focus on tensions, exits, and entrances within the group. Also decide on a title for each small section. Then identify an image for each of the titled sections. Focus on characterization and character relationships, as well as mood and atmosphere. Select a quote from the text to support each still image. You can find an image to represent your sections online.

STATION TWO Analyzing the Setting Looking at the description of The Valley of Ashes

STATION TWO Analyzing the Setting Looking at the description of The Valley of Ashes in Chapter Two, what does the billboard of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg’s eyes signify? What might this explain about the time period and the beliefs of the time period that this novel is set in? Read the two poems on the sheet (“The City” and “Chicago”) Analyze how the two poems describe the city. Write down key descriptive words within the poems. How do the descriptions vary from the way Fitzgerald describes The Valley of Ashes? Why might he work to describe this area in this way? What is significant about this section of the novel? How does Fitzgerald’s description of The Valley of Ashes vary from the description of NYC?

STATION THREE Gatsby’s Party What type of language is used to describe the party?

STATION THREE Gatsby’s Party What type of language is used to describe the party? How does Nick talk about the party as the narrator? Do you think Nick is a reliable narrator (can we/should we believe everything he tells us)? Why or why not? What does this party tell us about Gatsby? What do we find out about him throughout this scene? What does this party tell us about the time period? The idea of “intimacy” is mentioned several times throughout the first three chapters. Identify at least three quotes where this is discussed in the text and analyze why they are significant to the text overall. What is your personal definition of “intimate”? How does the text seem to describe it? Does your definition align with the texts? Analyze Jordan’s quote about intimacy at the party. What does she mean by it? Do you agree? Why or why not?
