How to Begin…(aka brainstorming) • What does America mean to you? (think about your poem) • If you had to make a flag to illustrate your poem, what would it look like? • Your flag should represent your America, and should be easily recognizable.

Choose the basic design. • Some of the most common designs are bicolors, tricolors, quarters, stripes and borders. The flag can also be a solid color but if it is make sure it has a unique symbol of a different color. You can also have a rectangle in the upper left hand corner called a canton (like the American flag) where you can put a symbol.

Use two to four colors. • If you use any more it will be confusing. The most common colors for flags are black, blue, green, red, white, and yellow. Just make sure all the colors have meaningful symbolism in them. For example if your location is near water, you could have blue in your flag to symbolize the water. • Black- determination, ethnic heritage, and/or defeating one's enemies. • Blue- freedom, vigilance, perseverance, justice, prosperity, peace, and/or patriotism. • Green- the Earth, agriculture, fertility, and/or the Muslim religion. • Red- courage, revolution, hardiness, blood, and/or valor. • White- peace, purity, mountain snow, and/or innocence. • Yellow- the sun, wealth, and/or justice.

Add a symbol • Having a symbol will help people tell your flag from another similar one. The symbol should be meaningful too. An eagle could symbolize freedom or power; a star could stand for divinity or honor.

Create the Flag • Once the flag is created, then you will need to complete the OPTIC and begin analyzing your own work. • Best Practice Hint – create your flag on a sheet of paper then complete the OPTIC. If the OPTIC doesn’t really describe what you want, then make changes to your flag. • One step further – create an OPTIC on what your flag should be, before you create the flag. Now, that’s beginning with the end in mind.

Analysis Paper • This is how you will present your flag. This is your chance to explain why you chose what you chose. • Your flag cannot speak, so your paper has to do the talking. • Your flag along with the paper will be displayed in the classroom. • We will have a silent gallery on Friday – so make your flag and paper do all the presenting.
