Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Overview of presentation: A more in-depth look at my morning presentation • Focusing on new editions of monographs – When to treat as new work – When to treat as expression of same work – How to relate successive monographic editions • Whether they are considered new works or new expressions 2

Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Review of general principles: differentiating works 1. RDA (6. 27. 1. 1): Differentiate two works with same or similar preferred title LC practice: do so only for two works with otherwise same authorized access point (AAP) 2. RDA: record the elements either as additions to AAP for the work, as separate elements, or both LC practice: (due to MARC 21 limitations? ) : always add to AAPs in cases of conflict, & optionally as separate elements 3

Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Review of general principles: expressions 1. Construct access points for all expressions of the same work by beginning with AAP for the work 2. Differentiate expressions of same work (RDA 6. 27. 3) LC practice: only in certain cases: translations, etc. Other expressions are identified by edition statements, date of publication, etc. , in other parts of record 5

Cataloging New Editions of Monographs: Is it a new expression of the SAME work, or a new (related) work? Treat as a new work when: New edition is adaptation or revision of previous edition, and is presented chiefly as work of adapter/reviser (RDA 6. 27. 1. 5) 6

Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Treat as a new work (cont. ): • Usually, creator of prior edition no longer in statement of responsibility (SOR) for title or for edition statement as author or co-author of work • OR: Same creator, but new resource with much different scope of content or coverage (sometimes indicated by title change or other information) 7

Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Treat as a new work (cont. ): • Do not collocate under AAP for earlier work • If AAPs for related works otherwise the same, differentiate them by making additions to AAP for new work (RDA/LCPS 6. 27. 1. 9) 8

Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Treating as a new work (cont. ): • If applicable, follow special additions for laws (6. 29. 1. 32), treaties, etc. (6. 29. 1. 33), and other legal works (6. 29. 1. 34) Referencing related works: – Recommended, but not required, to use one or more of RDA’s methods to relate works (RDA 24. 1 and 25. 1): identifier, structured description, unstructured description or an AAP 9

Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Treat as expression of SAME work when: • No evidence of major change in focus and: • Same creator when both editions have only one • For collaborative works: – First listed creator of earlier edition still in SOR for title proper or SOR for the edition (RDA 6. 27. 1. 3) – Creator names may be in same or different order in later edition 15

Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Relating expressions of the same work: RDA (24. 4, 26) allows the same techniques as for relating works: identifier, AAP, structured and unstructured descriptions LC recommends relating expressions by using unstructured description (500) or structured description (500, 580, or linking entry field) 18

Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Relating expressions of same work cataloged in different cataloging codes: pre-RDA AAP differs • LC suggests (Revised editions of monographs, slides 19 -21): – No need to recatalog related expression in RDA! – Name work in bib record according to RDA – Don’t use 130/240 or 7 XX added entry – Optionally, use unstructured or structured description to relate expressions (500 or 775) – If cataloging in OCLC and wishing to use 775, simply use “insert from cited record” technique 23

Creating New Editions of Monographs Example 1: Summary Same creator for all three editions; no drastic change in scope, so the three editions are considered successive expressions of the same work Since third edition has a different title proper than the second edition, the editions are collocated with the same preferred title. Major change from AACR 2, which would not use a uniform title, but instead an “edition history” note, and a “related work added entry” to earlier expression Optional but helpful to include structured description or unstructured note when prior edition has different title proper 31

(RDA 19. 2. 1. 1, 6. 27. 1. 3 -6. 27. 1. 4) • 2. What would be the AAP for this edition? • 3. Is it required to name all of the co-authors in the statement of responsibility? (RDA 2. 4. 1. 5) • 3. Is it required to give access points for all of the co-authors? Do all the access points need to be justified? (RDA 19. 2. 1) • 4. If using a linking entry to the 12 th edition, what form of entry would you use? Is it required to recatalog it according to RDA in order to provide the correct RDA form? 36
