rd th 3 -5 Grade Reading Strategies These strategies help with: (CAFÉ or CRAFT) • Comprehension • Accuracy • Fluency • Expanding Vocabulary
§ This strategy addresses § Stamina and engagement within a text § Focusing on a setting and character to deeply understand (comprehension) § Slows down a moment to justify thinking and allow for annotation.
§ Students often “zone out” and forget what they read. Standards 1 st-5 th are stair-stepped to create proficient readers who can retell, moving towards summarizing. § No matter the level, some kids need a strategy to not get overwhelmed with this skill. § Practice makes progress. The more students try it, the longer they can go between the retelling. Eventually, they conquer the task through this helpful tool.
§ This strategy helps reader to get in the practice of knowing with what to focus, determining importance. § 3 rd-5 th graders begin the process Photo credit: Jennifer Serravallo, The Reading Strategies Book of justifying their thinking. Stopping to jot helps a reader to think deeply, focus on a section, and (eventually) write to that jot with evidence of their thinking. § This work can be done on sticky notes and/or within reading response journals. § This work demonstrates the importance of slowing down to think about what is read.
At this level, questions should no longer be surface-level. In order to determine themes, make connections between texts, and make inferences, we have to ask questions and refer back to the text to support our thinking. We ask students to do this work with self-selected and assigned texts. The work is not about the book, but rather the focus is on the reader.
