RBSP Radiation Belt Storm Probes 3 -4 Sept. 2008 RBSP Electric Field and Waves Instrument (EFW) Product Assurance Trent Taylor, Flight Assurance Manager Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics University of Colorado at Boulder EFW INST+SOC PDR 97
Product Assurance Topics • Flight Assurance Team • EEE Parts, PWBs and GIDEP • PWA Build Processes • Workmanship Standards • Contamination Control • ESD Control Program 3 -4 Sept. 2008 EFW INST+SOC PDR 98
Flight Assurance Team • Trent Taylor, LASP Flight Assurance Manager • Tracy Vincent, EFW Quality Engineer • Sharon Dooley, EFW Procurement Expeditor and GIDEP Coordinator • Cat Brant, EEE Parts Engineer • Jeff Brown, LASP Controlled Stores Technician • Dwight Reinhardt, LASP Cleaning Lab Technician 3 -4 Sept. 2008 EFW INST+SOC PDR 99
EEE Parts, PWBs & GIDEP • LASP’s EEE Parts Engineer, Cat Brant, will work with the RBSP Parts Control Board to assure that all parts have approval for use. – Will facilitate delivery of as-built parts list – Parts will be procured, and derated, to EEE-INST-002, Level 2 or better • EEE spreadsheets used to track all pertinent information on a part-by-part basis, including TID, SEE, and Displacement Damage ratings • Exceptions will require PCB approval through waivers/deviations • Printed Wiring Boards – Coupon approval shall be obtained prior to population of flight PWBs. • LASP’s GIDEP process described in Alert and Advisory Procedure (103782) – Sharon Dooley is LASP’s Alert and Advisory Coordinator and GIDEP representative. – Single point of contact for entire lab – Disseminates information to all programs 3 -4 Sept. 2008 EFW INST+SOC PDR 100
PWA Build Processes • Inspect and remand EEE parts to program-segregated controlled stores • Evaluate PWBs, visual (coupon testing at APL) • EEE component lead-forming • Kitting inspection • Electrical assembly with magnified, 100% visual inspections and photographs at key process points • Aliveness testing • Staking and conformal coating • Final workmanship inspection and photographs • Environmental burn-in • Package and ship 3 -4 Sept. 2008 EFW INST+SOC PDR 101
Workmanship Standards • Certifications – NASA-STD-8739. 1, Staking and Conformal Coating – NASA-STD-8739. 2, Surface Mount Technology – NASA-STD-8739. 3, Soldered Electrical Connections – NASA-STD-8739. 4, Crimping, Cables and Harnesses – ANSI/ESD S 20. 20, Electrostatic Discharge Control • LASP QA has certified Level B Instructors for all 5 disciplines • Member of Process-Based Mission Assurance (PBMA) Knowledge Management System 3 -4 Sept. 2008 EFW INST+SOC PDR 102
Contamination Control • Cleaning provisions – – – PWBs cleaned and baked before assembly Gloves used during all handling All assembly done at Class 1000 flow-benches PWAs cleaned prior to conformal coating All materials compliant with NASA publication 1124 Packaging and shipping provisions to maintain low contamination exposure during transport – No items on Materials Identification List (MIL) with marginal out-gassing /off-gassing characteristics • Final bake-out process (RGA) 3 -4 Sept. 2008 EFW INST+SOC PDR 103
ESD CONTROL PROGRAM • ESD Control Program implemented by LASP QA – Mandatory training by LASP’s NASA-trained Level “B” ESD Control Instructor – Certification of lab users to the LASP ESD Procedure and ANSI/ESD S 20. 20 – Support for all assembly and test labs to ensure properly ESD-controlled environments 3 -4 Sept. 2008 EFW INST+SOC PDR 104
