Simplest ratio of materials needed How many bags of cement and sand are there? So we can say that for 1 bag of Cement there is 1 bag of Sand So we have a ratio of 1 Cement : 1 Sand
Double the mix needed How many bags of each do we have this time? We have doubled the amounts of each but the ratio still remains the same 1: 1 when we cancel down
Different proportion of mix We have 3 bags of cement to 6 bags of Sand. We can make this more simple to 1 bag of cement: 2 bags of sand
Ratio of Render mix (dubbing-out mixes) 1 Cement 5 Sand 1 Lime You need 350 kg of dubbing-out render mix in ratios of 5 sand: 1 cement: 1 lime. So there are 7 ratios in total of all the materials. Take the total of render needed 350 ÷ 7 = 50 kg = 1 ratio So 5 × 50 kg : 1 × 50 kg = 250 kg sand: 50 kg cement: 50 kg lime. Total of 350 kg telling us the values calculated are correct.
Ratio of Render mix (different ratio of dubbing) 1 cement ½ Lime 4 sand If we need to mix 550 kg of dubbing-out render in the above ratios. We might like to break each of the values into ½ because the lime is ½ a ratio. So we get 8 sand: 2 cement : 1 lime = 11 ratios in total. So 550 ÷ 11 =50 g = 1 Ratio. So ratio of sand = 50 x 8 = 400 kg, Cement = 2 x 50 =100 kg lime = 50 x 1 =50 kg. When we add all the values we get 400 + 100 + 50 =550 kg altogether.
Ratios used in other areas u Christmas cocktail 1 portion cranberry juice 2 portions raspberry 1 portion lemonade fizzy
Increase in Servings and hence proportions u Now if we want to make the cocktail for 6 people we will need X 6= Six Portions Cranberry juice X 6= 12 portions Raspberry juice X 6= 6 portions fizzy lemonade
Ratios in cooking u Stir fried chicken 100 g of spring onion 100 g of mushroom (25 cal/1 00 g) 9 cal/100 g 300 g of rice 140 cal /100 g 200 g of chicken 255 cal/ 150 g 100 g bamboo shoot 25 cal /100 g total amount in 1 portion is 800 g, ( feeds 2 people) So we get 1: 1: 3: 2: 1 = 8 ratios So 800 g ÷ 8 ratios So we get 400 g = feeds 1 person , Knowing this work out the questions on the next page
How to use ratios to work out different quantities of mixes u u u u How much of each ingredients will you need for 4 people? Find the amount of all the ingredients needed for a recipe that uses 300 g of spring onions. Given the following facts, work out the total calories need for, 1, 2, 3, portions. 100 g of boiled rice =140 Calories 150 g of chicken = 255 Calories 100 g of spring onion =25 Calories 100 g of mushroom = 9 Calories 100 g of Bamboo shoots = 25 Calories
Answers u u For four people you need 400 g x 4 =1, 600 g in total. The amount of each ingredients, needs to be multiplied by 2 Since there is 300 g of spring onion, i. e. 3 times the amount needed for 1 portion, then multiply each ingredient by 3 to get the right amount of each also. Rice 140 x 3 ( for 300 g)= 420 calories Calories for each ingredient can be worked out at follows: Chicken 255/3 = 85 calories for 50 g, so 85 Cal x 4 ( for 200 g) = 340 Calories 2 portions u u u Rice 600 g =140 calories ( per 100 g) x 6 = 840 Chicken 255/3 =50 g =85 calories x 8 ( 400 g ) = 680 calories Spring onion 25 x 2 = 50 Mushrooms 9 x 2 =18 Bamboo shoots 25 x 2 =50
