Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy REBT The 3 Basic
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy REBT
The 3 Basic Must’s • I must do well and win the approval of others for my performances or else I am no good • Others must treat me considerately, fairly and kindly, in precisely the way I want them to treat me, if they don’t, society and the universe should severely blame, damn, and punish them for their inconsiderateness. • Conditions under which I live must be arranged so that I get practically all I want comfortably, quickly and easily, and get virtually nothing that I don’t want.
Three Types of Acceptance Important for Health • Unconditional Self Acceptance – I am a fallible human being with good points and bad points – There is no reason why I must not have flaws – Despite my good and bad points, I am no less or more worthy that any other human being
Three Types of Acceptance Important for Health • Unconditional other acceptance – Other people will treat me unfairly sometime – There is no reason that I must treat them unfairly – The people who treat me unfairly are no more worthy and no less worthy than any other human being
Three Types of Acceptance Important for Health • Unconditional life acceptance – Life does not always work out the way that I’d like – There is no reason why life must go the way I want it to – Life is not necessarily pleasant but it is never awful and it is nearly always bearable
ABC’s of Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy • A - Activating experiences (something happens) • B – Beliefs (you have a belief, rational or irrational, about the situation) – Usually involves absolutes, demandingness, musterbations, or awfulizing • C – Consequences (you experience an emotional reaction to the belief, healthy or neurotic symptoms rise from these) • D – Dispute the irrational beliefs • E – Enjoy the positive psychological effects of rational beliefs
