Albert Ellis (1913 -2007) -Childhood issues - Ph. D. in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University -Trained in psychoanalysis -Sex, Marriage and Family Therapist -Known for his no nonsense style, profanity
REBT Why REBT? • “personal anti-neurosis campaign” • Focus: feeling better getting better • Adler, Rogers, Freud, Perls 1955 - Rational Therapy 1961 - Rational Emotive Therapy (RET) 1991 - Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) Pioneering form of CBT
REBT Main philosophy: “It’s never the events that happen to us that make us disturbed, but our view of them. ” Based on the assumption that cognition, emotion, and behavior are integrated. Goals Disturbed = thinking/feeling/acting in a selfdefeating manner • behavior ≠ person
ABCDE Model A = Activating Event / Adversity • thoughts, fantasies, emotions, other people • short description C = Consequence • emotions, behaviors • unhealthy vs. healthy B = Beliefs • rational vs. irrational
Beliefs Rational Beliefs • help people to achieve their basic goals and purposes • self-helping • healthy, productive, adaptive, and consistent with social reality Irrational Beliefs (IBs) • rigid, dogmatic, unhealthy, maladaptive, and interfere with achieving goals • self-defeating • demands, musts, and shoulds – “musturbatory thinking”
Musturbatory Thinking self-demandingness other-demandingness world-demandingness awfulizing I-can’t-stand-it-it is damnation allness/overgeneralization
DE D = Disputing* • Functional – what happens if you continue to hold on to this belief? • Logical – is the belief consistent? • Empirical – what evidence supports the belief? • Philosophic – refocus on life satisfaction Must realize B-C-D connection E = Effective New Philosophy
ABCDE Example Jess gets extremely anxious and nervous before giving a presentation. She thinks that if she messes up, or forgets information that her peers will think she’s stupid and her presentation will be ruined.
ABCDE Example A = Giving a presentation in class B = If I slip up, my presentation will be ruined and people will think I’m stupid. C = Anxious D = How does thinking this help you when you give your presentation? Does making a mistake really mean you failed at your presentation? Where is the evidence that you’re stupid? E = If I slip up on my presentation, I’d be a little upset but it doesn’t mean that I’m stupid or that my presentation is ruined.
