Rapidly Increasing Populations Objective To find out about
Rapidly Increasing Populations Objective: To find out about the issues facing countries with rapidly increasing population numbers.
So what is a rapidly growing population? • An increase of about 2% per year is enough to double population in as little as 30 years. • Caused by a high birth rate and a quickly falling death rate. • Population structure would resemble a pyramid. • Over 3 billion people live in countries with this triangular shaped structure
Pressure on the land. Over population causes: • Housing • Healthcare • Pollution • And the amount of land available. People live in areas ‘left over’ and that can be prone to flooding, landslides or subject to unclean water. Areas such as these are termed marginal land
Effects of overpopulation • Gender inequalities develop. Girls can be treated with less importance than boys. • This can lead to a drop in literacy rates amongst girls. • Competition for jobs drives down wages. • Rich countries benefit from this in terms of cheap goods e. g. Made in China. • Some migrate to other countries in search of jobs. i. e. Indians to Dubai.
