Definitions o Rape is a violent crime motivated by power and control o Rape can happen any time, or with anyone. It doesn’t matter how you are dressed, what you are doing, or if you have gone out before o Consent is when two people have equal power in any given situation. When you can freely give your permission without fear of pain concerning the consequences.
Definitions/ 3 Types of Rape o Rape = Forced or threatened unwanted sexual activity without consent. Force can be physical, stated or implied that causes fear of immediate death or physical injury. o Having sex with a person who is either inebriated (drunk) or high. They can not legally provide consent to mental impairment o Statutory rape is non-forcible sexual intercourse with a person who is younger than the statutory age of consent. (Ages and degrees on next slide)
Statutory Rape o Third-degree rape for anyone age 21 or older to have sexual intercourse with someone under age 17 o Second-degree rape for anyone age 18 or older to engage in sexual intercourse with someone under age 15. The fact that the offender was less than four years older than the victim at the time of the act is an affirmative defense. o First-degree rape to have sexual intercourse with someone (1) less than age 11 or (2) less than age 13 if the actor is age 18 or older
Rape facts pertaining to Women o 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14. 8% completed rape; 2. 8% attempted rape). 1 o 17. 7 million American women have been victims of attempted or completed rape. 1 o 9 of every 10 rape victims were female in 2003. 2
Rape facts pertaining to Men o About 3% of American men — or 1 in 33 — have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. 1 o In 2003, 1 in every ten rape victims were male. 2 o 2. 78 million men in the U. S. have been victims of sexual assault or rape. 1
Rape facts pertaining to Children o 15% of sexual assault and rape victims are under age 12. 3 o 29% are age 12 -17. o 44% are under age 18. 3 o 80% are under age 30. 3 o 12 -34 are the highest risk years. o Girls ages 16 -19 are 4 times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault. o 7% of girls in grades 5 -8 and 12% of girls in grades 9 -12 said they had been sexually abused. 4
Rape Facts o Every 2 minutes, someone in the U. S. is sexually assaulted. o Here's the math. According to the U. S. Department of Justice's National Crime Victimization Survey --there is an average of 207, 754 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault each year. o There are 525, 600 minutes in a non-leap year. That makes 31, 536, 000 seconds/year. So, 31, 536, 000 divided by 207, 754 comes out to 1 sexual assault every 152 seconds, or about 1 every 2 minutes.
More Facts Alcohol and Drugs o 90% of all rapes are alcohol or drug related o 75% of men and 55% of women involved in date rape were drinking or using drugs o Victims and perpetrators of rape come from every segment of society, regardless of age, race, culture, socioeconomic or educational background
Effects of Rape o Victims of sexual assault are: 7 o 3 times more likely to suffer from depression. o 6 times more likely to suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder. o 13 times more likely to abuse alcohol. o 26 times more likely to abuse drugs. o 4 times more likely to contemplate suicide.
Date Rape Drugs o Rohypnol (roofies, roaches, La Rocha, the forget pill) Uses to treat sleep disorders o GHB-gamma hydroxybutyrate (liquid ecstasy, liquid X, grievous bodily harm, easy lay) Central nervous system depressant found naturally in the brain and other tissues o Ketamine (Special K) General anesthetic used extensively in veterinary medicine o Alcohol is the substance most frequently associated with rape and the most easily accessible
and Think o Any kind of beverage can be drugged o Don’t leave drinks unattended o Don’t accept open containers at parties o Accept drinks only from bartenders and watch them open it o If you feel ill, get help immediately
Prevention of possible rape o Know your sexual intentions and limits o Communication your limits firmly and directly o Don’t assume the other person will automatically know o Trusts your instincts – don’t ignore them o If you feel uncomfortable in the situations get out of it, a little social awkwardness or embarrassment is better than potential assault o Use and maintain the “BUDDY SYSTEM”
You can prevent rape too o Listen Carefully-Take time to hear what the person is saying. If you feel he/she is not being direct or is giving you a “mixed message” ask for clarification. o Don’t fall for the myth that when a person says “No” they really means “Yes. ” “No” means “No” to any sexual contact, believe them and stop. o Remember that acquaintance rape is a crime. It is never acceptable to use force in sexual situations.
Fatal Assumptions o Don’t make assumptions about a person’s behavior. o Don’t assume that a person wants' to have sex because he/she is drinking, is dressed provocatively, or agrees to go alone with you. o Don’t assume because a person had sex with you before that he/she is willing to again. o Don’t assume that because a person consents to kissing or other activity that he/she is consenting to intercourse.
If you or a friend is raped… o Find a safe place -Call the police (911) o Tell a trusted friend – Don’t blame self o Do not shower, bathe, douche, change clothes, or in any way tamper with the area of assault (Evidence) o Get medical attention at any area hospital or health clinic – get tested for STI’s and pregnancy o Seek immediate emotional care (call Crisis Services at 834 -3131)
