Purpose of jotting is to capture your “in -the-moment” thinking Jotting = about 5 -7 min. of time spent reading! Students need to read with a lense. They do this by asking themselves,
Students can jot about… ● ● ● Plot summary Theories about characters Multiple themes Author craft & goal Part-to-whole Synthesizing across books or within a book
- Reading Notebook Entry Collecting jots with rich evidence to lead to a reading response. - Revisit old jots and revise our theories - Using writing as a tool to think about our reading.
Examples of Student Entries Synthesizing jots to create an outline for reading response Growing ideas about how character change can lead to themes
Reading Response -Responses begin with a topic sentence that Expectations communicates the writer's thesis. -Evidence from the book support and relate to thesis. -Organization is structured with a beginning, middle, and end. -Sentence structure, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization are mostly correct.
Possible Thesis Topics ● I can use this tool to focus my ideas, jots, and responses. ● I can use this tool to make personal reading goals. ● I can use this tool to prompt my reading response thesis. ○ “I am noticing that the author shows theme of family love through dialogue. ” ● I can use this tool to support my thesis with details and examples from the text.
Student Mentor -Thesis highlighting 2 themes. -Accurately quotes the text -Explains how the quote support thesis. -Ends with ranking themes.
