Summary of books I read by author February 1, 2010, Smile was published Smile is a true story about the author. In the book she knocks out her two front teeth by tripping in a race. She goes through lots of dental drama to finally have normal looking teeth again. Along the way she dealt with boys, friends, and school. September 13, 2016, Ghosts was published Ghosts is about a girl named Cat who has a sister, named Maya, with cystic fibrosis. She is sad to leave her friends and move to Northern California. Soon after moving she discovers that ghosts live in Bahia de la Luna. She didn’t want anything to do with ghosts because they might harm her sister. But she would soon have to put aside her fears and be brave. April 28, 2015, Baby Sitters club was published Kristy had a great idea one day to start a baby sitting club. She invites three others into the club and together they saved the day. The whole thing was not easy though. They faced toddlers, dogs, prank calls and much more! In the end they had a successful business.
Types of characters v Sassy - in Baby sitters club, Kristy wouldn’t eat the food Walter brought. In Smile, Raina doesn’t like her mom hugging her on the first day of school, and in Ghosts Maya’s mom never ate the food her mom made for dinner. v Protective – in Baby Sitters Club, Kristy protected and took care of a child who got hurt. In Smile, Raina was more protective of her teeth after she knocked them out, and in Ghosts, Cat tells her little sister to be carful when playing with Ghosts. v Skeptical – in Baby Sitters Club, Kristy was at first skeptical at the idea of letting Stacey in to the club. In Smile, Raina was Skeptical of all the procedures the dentists were going to have to do to her teeth, and in Ghosts, Maya was skeptical about ghosts but then got to know them better.
Themes v The theme in Baby Sitters Club is make do with what you have because in the book Kristy finds that she has to take care of big dogs not kids so instead of complaining she sucks it up, and makes do with what she has. v The theme in Ghosts is life isn’t fair because in the book Cat doesn’t want to move away from her friends but she has no choice and it isn’t fair. Anther example is when Maya can’t trick–or-treat because of her sickness and she doesn’t think it’s fair that Cat can. v The theme in Smile is think before you act because in the book Raina was racing to the house and she didn’t stop to think before she started running and so she tripped and knocked her teeth out.
Raina’s writing style v The main characters in all of Raina’s books are dynamic characters. For example in Ghosts Maya starts out hating how different the town they moved to is and by the end she accepts that it is different and unique. v All of the authors books are in third person point of view. v A pattern I have noticed in the plot/storyline is every book starts out fine then the problem comes in later and the whole book is trying to solve the problem. After the climax there is a short resolution and the book ends on a positive note with a learning experience. v The word choice in all the books is the same. For example Raina’s word choice is very to-the-point and not very detailed because it is mostly dialogue.
What I liked and didn’t like What did I like? I liked how each story had an important theme to go with it. I also liked the illustrations and how they really brought the book to life. I love how each book had real life problems that we can learn from. I also liked how much action there was and how the book kept me on the edge of my seat. What didn’t I like? I think she could have gone into more detail or have been more specific at times. I also think she should have described how the character felt and she should have done first person point of view and not third person point of view.
Who I recommend this book to people who like comics and pictures and people who like realistic fiction and real life problems. If you like action and cliffhangers and hate romance and boring talk these are the books for you. If you like fantasy or history these are not for you.
