Part of Sydney’s rich history • John Fairfax & sons – 1856 – 1955 • Began life as the Fairfax building printing Australia’s oldest surviving newspaper, the SMH • Designed in Italianate style – three storeys and a basement • Extended between 1922 and 1929 using Bondi sandstone and Bowral trachyte to clad one of Sydney’s earliest concrete frame structures. Now stood at nine levels – cupola for height effect • 1955 – 21 December – last edition of SMH rolls off the presses • Bank of New South Wales 1956 – 1997 • Building sold to Bank of NSW – now Westpac • Radisson Hotel Sydney 2000 – 2010 • Adaptive construction takes place from 1998 – 2000 to turn the building into a hotel • Three additional levels added and the cupola raised 3
