He was fired, imprisoned, then released, and sought refuge in London England while continuing to speak out about the injustice of the Russian secret service and how there were criminals in there using it for their own illegal purposes. Years later he was poisoned by Polonium 210 in a cup of tea. In 23 days he was dead. His killer has never been found.
