Political Science Massachusetts ● Theocracy- government based on religious law. ● John Winthrop founded massachusetts, and he applied their religious beliefs to the way they ruled. ● They got a royal charter from the king to start their government. There were 2 people from each town to represent in the government. ● Government officials were elected annually by only free men that were church members.
Social ● ● ● ● Only religion was Puritan, they wanted to purify the Anglican church. Other religions were not tolerated, just the Puritan religion was allowed and those who was not of that religion was not allowed to own any land. Lived in dugouts, wigwams, and dirt-floor huts. They had tools to hunt, fish, and farm. The Puritans eventually started some universities and valued education. They ate eel, oysters, lobster, grapes, strawberries, plums, and herbs. They celebrated many holidays such as Easter, Christmas, and Thanksgiving.
Economy -The Massachusetts Colony got fish and whales from the ocean, timber from the forests, furs from the animals, and did some farming as well. -The Massachusetts Colony exhausted the use of native shrubs, hunted many animals to near extinction for things such as fur. As far as landscapes the colony has a lot of hills (Massachusetts means “At the great hill”) -The Massachusetts Colony money by farming(fishing, corn, livestock), Manufactured stuff (lumbering, shipbuilding). On the coast, the colonists made their living fishing, whaling, and shipbuilding. -The Colony traded slightly with the other New England Colonies, and traded a lot with Europe in the mid 1700 s, exported fish, lumber and farm products.

Pilgrims celebrate the first Thanksgiving in Plymouth. ● 1629. Massachusetts Bay Company chartered. ● 1634. Boston Common became the first public park in America. ● 1636. Harvard, the first American College, founded in Newtowne (now Cambridge). ● 1639. First commercial printing press in English-speaking North America set up in Cambridge by Stephen Daye. ● 1639. The first free American public school, the Mather school, founded in Dorchester, a neighborhood of Boston. --The Massachusetts Colony began when King Charles wrote a royal charter sending Puritan leaders to the New World. They settled around 1630 -Massachusetts Colony was unique because it was founded by Puritans and it flourished. - “And further, That the said Governour and Companye, and their Successors, maie have forever one comon Seale, to be used in all Causes and Occasions of the said Company, and the same Seale may alter, chaunge, breake, and newe make, from tyme to tyme, at their pleasures. ”
