Radiation to electronics, annual meeting First of all, welcome to this R 2 E annual meeting! In the Accelerator and Technology Sector, we have a new department SY, Accelerator Systems department, is where the R 2 E project is attached. Crucial presence also in the BE (Beams) department, especially for electronics testing and facility operation As Deputy Department Head, I am delighted to open this annual meeting. 2 February 2021 R 2 E annual meeting 2
R 2 E annual meeting R 2 E was launch at CERN in 2010, following the LHC start and radiation issues with electronics. At this time, I was the new group leader of the power converters group, and we were more than happy to get the support of R 2 E to solve our issues. Since, many studies, mitigations, actions, projects, were launched and performed. LS 1 was the first period where many actions took place, like shielding… Which led to a very successful Run 2 of the LHC. For HL-LHC, 0. 1 dump/fb -1 is the (challenging) goal 2 February 2021 R 2 E annual meeting 3
R 2 E within TE-EPC, now SY-EPC Many power converters are placed inside the LHC tunnel and alcoves. The ones in the UJ (inner triplet powering) were moved in LS 1. Shielding was installed in RR and UJ, waiting for the power converter upgraded, foreseen in LS 2. Here is the list of the new equipment designed with R 2 E, for ~20 MCHF. 2 February 2021 R 2 E annual meeting 4

Main R 2 E building blocks The development process is complex and long and we need many services to succeed. Building blocks from Rubén, R 2 E meeting 2018. Rad-tol system development (mainly) Radiation Monitoring and based on COTS Calculation Radiation Hardness Assurance Qualification Approach Radiation Test Facilities mitigation → prevention 2 February 2021 R 2 E annual meeting 7
Radiation tests facility With the EAST area renovation, CHARM is confirmed as a major radiation test facility. CHARM should be operating from 10 October for 26 days 2 February 2021 R 2 E annual meeting 8
Radiation calculation, FLUKA Next step is to prepare for HL-LHC Key in determining radiation levels for LIU and HL-LHC configuration and operational conditions Efficiently covering large majority of HL-LHC (WP 10) areas of concern for equipment groups: • Shielded areas (UJ, UL, RR) around IP 1, 5 and 7 • DS in IP 1, 5 and 7 (including possible cell 9 location for 11 T/TCLD) For HL-LHC, 0. 1 dump/fb -1 is the (challenging) goal 2 February 2021 R 2 E annual meeting 9
Rad-tol system development based on COTS Next step is to prepare for HL-LHC As an example, 60 A and 120 A development for installation in LS 3. 2 February 2021 R 2 E annual meeting 10
R 2 E vigilance Many mitigations, many upgrades already performed. However, we need to stay vigilant, changes can go very fast with beam settings and especially with the new LIU beams. Reminder: all new electronics devices must be qualified by R 2 E. 2015: - Start of the year: n. QPS SEEs (introduced in LS 1) - Rest of the year: mainly FGC 2 in the arc 2016: - SEE rate reduction mainly due to lower arc radiation levels (vacuum conditioning) 2017: - Further improvement thanks to FGClite deployment in ARC; most R 2 E events in power converters in RR (upgraded in LS 2 with radiation tolerant versions) 2018: - Increased radiation levels in DS of IP 1 and IP 5 due to TCL 6 opening → impact on QPS equipment (possibly lifetime related, i. e. no longer linear versus integrated luminosity) 2 February 2021 R 2 E annual meeting 11
R 2 E within ATS The project is strongly supported by ATS. R 2 E will continue to run at least until LS 3 to prepare LHC for High Luminosity operation. Thanks to the new ATS structure, R 2 E shall profit of synergies inside the new BE-CEM group. R 2 E is an excellent example of collaboration inside CERN but also outside CERN with other labs and companies. Long-lasting efforts to develop competencies and to build infrastructure for R 2 E, all will continue to be secured. 2 February 2021 R 2 E annual meeting 12
Conclusions R 2 E is a very attractive project at CERN. R 2 E is crucial for LHC operation. CHARM will be soon fully available with a brand new beam line. We will have to wait for 2022 to see all the improvements done during LS 2 for LHC operation. R 2 E is fully supported by the management of the Accelerator and Technology Sector. 2 February 2021 R 2 E annual meeting 13
