What Are They? • Quotation marks are used to let the reader know when someone is speaking in a book • They let you know what they said and who said it
Examples “I don’t want to clean my room, ” said Emily. “You have to clean it or you won’t be able to go out and play, ” scolded her mom. “Ok, I’ll go do it right now, ” sighed Emily.
Rules For Using Quotation Marks • They only go around what the person is saying • You have to put them at the beginning and at the end of what was said • You need to note afterwards who said it • Use a comma, period, question mark, or exclamation mark before the last quotation mark
