Character Paragraph Vera, from Saki’s short story, “The Open Window, ” is best described as in control using direct and indirect characterization. The opening lines of the story reveal Vera is left to greet company on her own. “’My aunt will be down presently, Mr. Nuttel, ’ said a very self-possessed young lady of fifteen; ‘in the meantime you must try and put up with me. ’” Direct characterization indicates that Vera is “self-possessed; ” she possesses or commands, controls, herself. Further, the comment that an adult “must try, ” as in force himself, “and put up with, ” or tolerate, a lesser person / hostess as his companion while the lady of the house is indisposed, allows her to acknowledge, in a self-deprecating manner, the disparity in age and seeming interests while directing Mr. Nuttel to wait for an undisclosed amount of time for the lady of the house. The detail that Mr. Nuttel would be left alone with a fifteen-year-old defines the trust placed in Vera to make outsiders feel at home and properly entertained.
