QUI vs. QUE
QUI vs. QUE • QUI & QUE are RELATIVE PRONOUNS • They connect two ideas (clauses) into a single, more complex sentence • They introduce a DEPENDENT CLAUSE that describes a previously mentioned person/thing (ANTECEDENT) L’homme est grand. L’homme est mon oncle = The man is tall. The man is my uncle. L’homme QUI est grand, est mon oncle = the man WHO is tall, is my uncle La femme est dans le jardin. Tu as vu la femme dans le jardin = the woman is in the garden. You saw the woman in the garden La femme QUE tu as vue, est dans le jardin = the woman WHOM you saw, is in the garden
QUI ou QUE? A relative pronoun introduces a clause that modifies a noun QUI QUE / QU’ ( = SUBJECT of clause) (= OBJECT of clause) La femme QUI vient d’entrer est ma mère Les hommes QUE tu as vus hier sont mes oncles (= the woman WHO has just entered is my mother) (= the men WHOM you saw yesterday are my uncles) L’alliance QUI est à son doigt est très belle L’alliance QU’il lui a donnée est très belle (= the ring WHICH is on her finger is very beautiful) (= the ring WHICH he gave her is very beautiful)
QUI vs. QUE QUI: • means WHO / WHICH (depending on if it refers to a PERSON or THING) • is used as the SUBJECT of the dependent clause • the verb following QUI agrees with the antecedent • There is NO new subject! J’ai voté pour Hollande QUI était le meilleur candidat, à mon avis = I voted for Hollande, WHO was the best candidate, in my opinion Le parti politique les Verts, QUI veut protéger l’environnement, manifeste à Paris = The Green political party, WHICH wants to protect the environment, is protesting in Paris
QUI vs. QUE: • means WHOM / THAT (depending on if it refers to a PERSON or THING) • is used as the DIRECT OBJECT of the dependent clause • the verb following QUE will have a NEW subject! L’athlète QUE j’admire le plus, a gagné une médaille aux Jeux Olympiques = the athlete, WHOM I admire the most, won a medal at the Olympic Games Le championnat QU’ on regarde à la télé, est mal joué = the championship, THAT we’re watching on TV, is badly played
QUI vs. QUE: • When the dependent clause has a verb in the Passé Composé, the Past Participle MUST agree in number and gender with the antecedent of QUE: Les robes QU’on a vu. ES à Paris, étaient belles = the dresses THAT we saw in Paris, were beautiful Les élections présidentielles QU’on a eu. ES récemment, étaient une scandale internationale = the presidential election THAT we had recently, was an international scandal
