Simple Questions • A simple question has the interrogative, a verb, and (perhaps)a Direct object: (Esp. when verb is “être!”) • Qui est là? • Où est mon livre? • Quand est ton anniversaire? • Comment est-il? • Combien d ’étudiants sont dans cette classe? • In these questions, the interrogative is ALSO the subject of the sentence!
More Complex Questions • More complex questions involve the interrogative, a Noun and a corresponding verb and (perhaps) a direct object. • In English, we express more complex questions with Do (does) or Is (are). • E. G. Who (do) you like? • Where (are) you studying tonight? • In French, they use “Est-ce que” (“Is it that”) • Qui est-ce que tu aimes? • Où est-ce que tu étudies ce soir? • In these questions, the interrogative is NOT the subject!
Let’s Compare • Qui aime chanter? • Où est ma voiture? • Quand est notre examen? • Comment est la soupe? • Combien de livres sont dans ton sac? • Qui est-ce que tu aimes? • Où est-ce que Maman préfère dîner? • Quand est-ce que vous travaillez? • Comment est-ce que tu danses? • Combien de soeurs estce que tu as?
More Interrogatives • (If you think of “Est-ce que” as “Is it that”, it will help you write your questions more correctly. ) • E. G. Instead of “Where do you live” think of it as “Where is it that you live” • Où est-ce que tu habites? • Try this: When do you play? • Quand est-ce que tu joues?
Qu’est-ce que
Pourquoi? • Parce que! (Parce qu’)
EST-CE QUE • NOW think of Est-ce que as IS IT THAT! • • WHERE is it that you live? What is it that you study? Who is it that you like? Why is it that you sing (are singing)? How many pets is it that you have? When is it that you work? How is it that you prefer your coffee?
