ØQuestioning should be used purposefully to achieve well-defined goals. ØBloom's Taxonomy is a classification of thinking organised by level of complexity. ØThe taxonomy involves all categories of questions.
BLOOM’S TAXONOMY Evaluation Synthesis Analysis Application Comprehension Knowledge
KNOWLEDGE Ø Remembering previously learned material, recalling facts, terms, basic concepts from stated text. Ø Recognize and Recall Ø Question verbs: Define, list, state, identify, label, name, who? when? where? what?
COMPREHENSION Ø The ability to grasp the meaning of material. Ø Question verbs: Explain, predict, interpret, infer, summarize, convert, translate, give example, account for.
APPLICATION § The ability to use learned material in new and concrete situations. § Question verbs: How would you show, make use of, modify, demonstrate, solve, or apply.
ANALYSIS § The ability to break down material into its component parts. § Identifying parts, analysis of relationships between parts, recognition of the organizational principles involved. § Question verbs: Differentiate, compare / contrast, distinguish, how does x affect or relate to y? why? how?
SYNTHESIS § The ability to put parts together to form a new whole. § Question verbs: Design, construct, develop, formulate, imagine, create, change, write a short story and label the following elements.
EVALUATION § The ability to judge the value of material (statement, research report) for a given purpose. § Question verbs: Justify, appraise, evaluate, judge x according to given criteria.
