Question of the Day What is biotechnology Modifying
Question of the Day: What is biotechnology? “Modifying an activity/organism to be more effective in serving people”
Give an Example Review 1. Be prepared to share your example of Biotechnology A. What is this? B. How has this example served people? C. How do you feel this technology will change in the future?
{ History of Biotechnology
Objectives 1. List the milestones in development of biotechnology -Seed Collection -Food Preservation -Bread Making -Cell Discovery 2. Compare and contrast the development of agriculture with the development of civilization 3. Define a Genetically Modified Organism 4. Explain how biotechnology has and will help feed the world’s population
The Beginning of Biotechnology How did people survive before biotechnology? -Humans survived by collecting seeds from plants in the environment -Large & Small Animals were hunted and killed for food -When supply ran short people would simply move their villages to a spot with enough food.
The Beginning of Biotechnology What is the first evidence of biotechnology? - Humans began to realize they could manipulate areas to produce their own food - They started to save seeds from only the very best plants for the following year - Specific animals were more adaptable to domestication than others - Meaning, easy access to byproducts: Boiling hooves for glue and preserving skin for clothes
Expansion of Civilization How did established communities develop? -Humans could produce enough food to live in one area -This allotted more time to develop new tools= saved labor -The people started to develop profit/trade for goods -People then started to travel and deliver goods to distances
Food Biotechnology Food Preservation - People learned to use various products from the animals they used for food - Example: a calf’s stomach as a storage vessel for water and other liquids
Food Biotechnology “The Milk that Spoiled” - A man traveled across the dessert in the middle east with stored milk in the calf stomach - The pouch was tied to the side of a horse, the milk sloshed inside the pouch while walking across the dessert - The combination of the sun, body heat, and sloshing caused the particles to coagulate - CHEESE was developed (Biotechnology was used-Enzyme of rennin)
Food Biotechnology “Bread Making” - Natives noticed many grass seeds are good to eat, and many when ground produced a powder=FLOUR - When they added yeast, bread became fluffy
The People of Biotechnology “Bread Making” - People made the impact
