Victorian Entertainment - Background For centuries the word 'freak' has been used cruelly to describe people born with 'abnormal' features, or those able perform extraordinary physical acts by contorting or misshaping their bodies. Exhibitions of live human curiosities had appeared in travelling fairs, circuses and taverns in England since the 1600 s. These included so-called giants, dwarves, fat people, the very thin, conjoined twins and even people from exotic climes. Freak shows were a particularly popular form of entertainment during the Victorian period, when people from all classes flocked to gawp at these unusual examples of human life.

Questions to ask yourself ● 1. Pick out the point of connection in the question. ● 2. Search out the textual details relevant to the focus (or parameters) of the question. ● 3. Independently ask yourself: If this is so, what does this lead me to infer/realise/appreciate about what I’ve been asked to focus on? ● 4. Bring the two sets of details (and implied meanings) together in your own writing.

Making Inferences ● What does this suggest to me about (what people did for fun or entertainment)? ● What might I imply from this about (…)? ● What does it make me realise (. . . )? You should be using phrases like This might suggest to me that… You could infer from this that…

Formulating a response The S. Q. I method Text mark or list details from both texts – to cover the requirement for details (in this question about different things to see and do). Then: ● Make clear statements about the connections (in this case differences) ● Quote details ● Make an inference from the quotation which shows understanding.

Two Approaches ● You could either: ● Write a single, integrated paragraph as a response to both sources. ● Write two connected (or linked) paragraphs as their preferred response to both sources.
