QUANTIFIERS
What are quantifiers? words that are used to state quantity or amount of something without stating the exact number answer the questions "How many? " and "How much? ” used with plural countable nons and uncountable nouns some, any, no, a lot of, much, many, few, a few, little, a little, both, each the choice of quantifier often depends on the kind of noun that follows it TYPES OF QUANTIFIERS: with COUNTABLE NOUNS with UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS with eather COUNTABLE or UNCOUNTABLE
SOME positive sentences - when asking a question, if the answer is expected to be positive - Examples: The students have some free time. Would you like some cake?
ANY - negative sentences - in questions Examples: I don't have any money today. My brother never does any thing good. Do you have any ice cream left? - can also be used in positive statements to mean 'no matter which', 'no matter who', 'no matter what‘ “You can borrow any of my books. ” “They can choose anything from the menu. ” “You may invite anybody to dinner, I don't mind who comes. ”
- compound nouns with some- and any- are used in the same way as some and any Positive statements: “Someone is using a mobile phone. ” “He saw something outside. ” Questions: “Are you looking for someone? ” (= I'm sure you are) “Have you lost something? ” (= I'm sure you have) “Is there anything to eat? ” (a real question) “Did you go anywhere last night? ” Negative statements: “She didn't go anywhere last night. ” “He doesn't know anybody here. ”
NO - positive sentences with negative meaning Examples: There is no coffee left in the jar. We have no milk this morning. They had no pens in the shop.
A LOT OF positive sentences - negative sentences - questions - Examples: There a lot of dogs in the street. I have a lot of time to answer your questions. I saw a lot of people waiting in the queue. We did have a lot of fun, didn't we?
MUCH vs. MANY MUCH singular uncountable nouns Examples: How much money have you got? Much of his day is spent doing paperwork. MANY plural countable nouns Examples: How many people work in your firm? We operate in many different countries.
FEW vs. A FEW = not many used before countable nouns and has a negative meaning Examples: If there are few opportunities for promotion, young high-flyers will look for another job. Few people like heir boss interfering with theri work. A FEW = some / a small number of used before countable nouns Examples: All of you might be working in a few years’ time. After a few weeks you will have an English quiz.
LITTLE vs. A LITTLE = not much used with uncountable nouns often preceded by ‘very’ and has a negative meaning Examples: There is little time left for discussion. There’s very little space in my office. A LITTLE = a small amount used with uncountable nouns Examples: I need a little more time to think about your proposal.
