§ Objectives: OA 8: Expresar cantidades, contar y enumerar; por ejemplo: two/four thousand/one million; enough/no money/time. Objectives of the class: To be able to identify quantifiers to describe quantities in singular and plural nouns. To ask and answer questions related to quantities. To use quantifiers according to a context and use them correctly.
QUANTIFIERS • A quantifier is a word or phrase that is used before a noun to indicate the amount of quantity. • Some, many, a lot of, a few are examples of quantifiers • Example: There are some books on the desk
IRREGULAR PLURAL NOUNS. In English we use to add an “s”at the end of the word to make plurals, however, there exist irregular plural nouns. These are: • MAN = MEN. • WOMAN = WOMEN. • PERSON = PEOPLE. • CHILD = CHILDREN. • FOOT= FEET. • GOOSE= GEESE. • MOUSE = MICE.
We can use the indefinite article a /an with singular nouns: • A dog is an animal. • I’m waiting for a bus. • NOTE: If the noun begins with A-E-I-O-U We have to use AN (Ex: an Apple) If the noun starts with a consonant we use A (Ex: A Table)

A little We use a little with SINGULAR nouns, only in affirmative sentences. -There is a little water in the bottle. -There is a little butter in the pan. -There is a little milk in the glass.
A few… We use A FEW with PLURAL nouns, , only in affirmative sentences. • -There a few books in the bookcase. • -There a few people in the market. • -There a few letters in the post box. • -There a few students in the class.
A lot of… • We use A LOT OF is used with SINGULAR and PLURAL nouns. It means a large number or amount, and it is used only in affirmative sentences. • -We have a lot of time. • -There a lot of eggs in the fridge. • -There is a lot of money in the purse. • -I have a lot of books.
Some-any We use some in affirmative sentences and with PLURAL and SINGULAR nouns. We use any in negative and interrogative sentences and with PLURAL and SINGULAR nouns. -There is some milk in the glass. -There isn’t any milk in the glass. -Is there any milk in the glass? -There are some books in the bag. -There aren’t any books in the bag. -Are there any books in the bag?
We use MANY with: PLURAL nouns, in question and negative sentences How many eggs are there? There aren’t many eggs. How many oranges are there in the bowl? There aren’t many oranges in the bowl.
We use MUCH with: SINGULAR nouns, in QUESTIONS and NEGATIVE sentences. How much honey is there in the honey-bee jar? There isn’t much. How much shampoo is there in the bottle? There isn’t much.
How much… ? vs. How many… ? • How much –SINGULAR NOUNS (=cuánto, cuánta) We use “how much” to ask about QUANTITY– So, we use HOW MUCH with singular nouns. “HOW MUCH milk IS THERE? ” • How many –PLURAL NOUNS (=cuántos, cuántas) We use “how much” to ask about QUANTITYSo, we use HOW MANY with plural nouns. “HOW MANY apples ARE THERE? ”
How much chocolate is there? There is a lot of chocolate.
How many women are there in the picture? There a lot of women in the picture.
Is there…? vs. Are there…? • Is there –SINGULAR NOUNS (=hay…? ) • Are there –PLURAL NOUNS (=hay…? ) q We use “IS THERE” to ask about QUANTITY – q We use “ARE THERE” to ask about QUANTITY- So, we use IS THERE with singular nouns. So, we use ARE THERE with plural nouns. “IS THERE ANY milk? ” “ARE THERE ANY apples? ”
Is there any money? Yes, there is. There is a lot of money.
Are there any jam jars on the table? No, there aren´t. There aren´t any jam jars on the table.

To sum up v Quantifiers are used to indicate an amount of quantity. v For expressing quantity it is necessary identify the type of noun “Singular / Plural Nouns”. v Quantifiers are also used according to the type of sentence “affirmative , negative and interrogative form”. v For asking questions about quantity you use “How much…How many…” and “Is there…- Are there…”
