Our objectives • Working in partnership with higher education institutions, we set the standards and the qualifications students must achieve to step into their first job with the right knowledge and skills to support and look after people, patients, mothers and babies, and the public with kindness, respect and compassion. • This also lays the foundation for revalidation and their future career

The Voice of the public in our work • Established a Public Support Service to ensure the voice of patients, families and the public is included in our decisionmaking • Holding public consultations to gather the views of the public to help shape our work • Focus groups with patient and public groups to share ideas and gather feedback • Updating all our communications with tone of voice guidelines so it’s in plain English and easy to use

The importance of Lay Visitors • In 2013 we improved monitoring visits of approved education institutions (AEIs) by including Lay Visitors • This builds on already extensive requirements for AEIs to involve patients and the public in the design, development delivery and evaluation of training programmes • Including Lay Visitors in our work has improved openness and transparency about this important area of regulation
