Emperor Justinian (reign 527 -565) • Officially Roman Emperor, but wanted all of Rome • Goal = Reconquer the Western Empire from the “barbarians” • Problem = War is expensive • Solution – High Taxes – Trickey: Forged wills, cut pay to soldiers, etc • Justinian became unpopular

THEODORA AND THE NIKA RIOTS • NIKA RIOTS- Angry sports fans began a riot that destroyed the city • Theodora- Wife of Justinian, smart, tough, beautiful, former “dancer” • She refused to run, Justinian stayed and put down the rebellion • Justinian built up Constantinople, especially the HAGIA SOPHIA CATHEDRAL!!!
