Son of Macedonia • Macedonia- Land North of Greece • 338 BCE- King Philip II conquered all Greece • His son, Alexander, tutored by Aristotle • Philip assassinated, Alexander’s mother, Olympias, put him on the throne • The Persian Empire, which stretched from Egypt to India, was weak, rebellions common • Alexander set out to conquer it
Alexander Conquers • Macedonian Phalanx army conquered Asia Minor, Egypt, Babylon, Persia, and beyond… • Founded cities all over, named them Alexandria • Married Persian princess to develop good relations, encouraged his men to marry from conquered peoples • In India, they encountered warriors on elephants • Tired army returned to Babylon • Alexander died of fever without naming a successor
