El Preterito • The Preterite Tense refers to actions that occurred in the PAST. These actions had a set beginning and an end. 6: 00 I ate breakfast

Where have we seen this? • You are already familiar with some of the Preterite Tense. • For instance when you say – Yo compré – I bought • This is an example of the Preterite Tense because it is a completed action.

The Pretertie Tense of Regular Verbs • For –AR verbs we follow the normal steps of conjugation that we would have in the present tense. Yo compré Nosotros Compramos Tú compraste Vosotros Comprasteis Él Ella Ud. Ellos Ellas Uds. compró compraron

• -ER and –IR verbs have the SAME endings in the Preterite Tense. Yo comí Yo escribí Nosotros comimos Nosotros escribimos Tú comiste Tú escribiste Vosotros comisteis Vosotros escribisteis Él Ella comió / escribió Ud. Ellos Ellas Uds. comieron / escribieron

EJEMPLOS • Ayer yo comí el pan tostado. – Yesterday I ate toast. • Anteayer ellos practicaron el béisbol. – The day before yesterday they practiced baseball. • Mi padre escribió un correo electrónico. – My father wrote an email.

Things to take note of • -AR and –ER verbs that have a stem change in the Present Tense do NOT have a stem change in the Preterite. • Generalmente me pruebo la ropa antes de comprarla, pero ayer no me probé los pantalones que compré.

• VER has regular Preterite endings, but unlike those of other verbs, they have no written accent marks. • Anoche, David vio una película. • Last night, David saw a movie.

• Verbs that en in –car, -gar, or –zar have a spelling change in the YO form. CAR GAR ZAR

• CAR – Yo / buscar – Yo busqué • GAR – Yo / pagar – Yo pagué • ZAR – Yo / almorzar – Yo almorcé
