BACKGROUND OF DOSM Established in 1949 under the provisions of the Statistics Ordinance 1949

BACKGROUND OF DOSM Established in 1949 under the provisions of the Statistics Ordinance 1949 - Bureau of Statistics. Under the provisions of the Statistics Act 1965 (Revised 1989), known as Department of Statistics, Malaysia. The function as stipulated in the Act: TO COLLECT and INTERPRET STATISTICS for the purpose of formulation or implementation of Government policies in WHATEVER FIELDS as needed by the Government or fulfilling the requirements of trade, commerce, industry, agriculture or others. Malaysia’s Statistical System: A centralised system and at the same time allows other government agencies to collect statistics to fulfill their own needs 4

Identify and define statistical priorities and requirements in line with national planning; Coordinate, at the technical level, the collection and dissemination of statistics by government agencies in order to ensure, among others; i. The efficient and effective utilisation of available resources; ii. The use of standard concepts, definitions and classifications; iii. The use of appropriate and effective methods in the collection and production of statistics; and iv. The production of integrity, reliable and timely data; Set up Technical Working Groups for specific statistical activities where applicable; and Meetings will be held minimum two times a year. DOSM CONTINUES TO EVOLVE Formulate strategic plans that identify focus areas and strategies in tandem with developments plans The first Strategic Plan (SP) 1988 -1993 Area of focus include identification, collection and compilation of priority data for; v Economic development; v Evaluations and monitoring of New Economics Policy; and v Manpower planning SP 2010 -2014 v Strategies are flexible and in line with the 10 th Malaysia Plan and main thrusts of national vision and “ 1 Malaysia – People First, Performance Now” concept; and v Take into account globalisation, economic liberalisaton, Economic Transformation Programme and Government Transformation Programme. 19
