Bangers MACE Canada Pencil Type Shell Crackers Pistol Type BEARWISE Bangers, scare cartridges and shell crackers all contain a fuse. These fused projectiles travel 50 -200 feet before exploding. 12 Gauge Type 2
Screamers, whistlers & whistle crackers make a continuous high-pitched noise. These projectiles may emit a bright light or explode with a loud bang at the end of their flight, approximately 250 to 300 feet away. Pencil Type Screamer BEARWISE MACE Canada 12 Gauge Whistle Crackers Not Recommended Pistol Type 3

Effective Range of Pencil Style Banger Cartridge Noise level at bears position is the same as at the shooters position. Effective range of “pencil type banger” 260 feet (86 yards ) plus Approx. Range of Banger = 130 feet (41 yards) Sound travels out equally in all directions BEARWISE 10
Considerations n n n No “banger” or any other pyrotechnical device should ever be shot directly at a bear. Always alert the bear of your location prior to firing a banger. Never shoot from inside a vehicle, whether stationary or moving. Bangers can be fire hazard. Bears can become habituated to loud noises. 11

Pencil Type Screamer BEARWISE MACE Canada 12 Gauge Whistle Crackers Not Recommended Pistol Type 12
Screamer Considerations Always alert the bear of your location prior to firing. n Always aim off to the side of the bear no matter the deterrents range. n Never shoot from inside a vehicle. n Screamers can be a fire hazard if used improperly. n Bears can become habituated to loud noises. n 13

BEARWISE n n n Pistol type launchers are effective, practical, inexpensive and easy-to-use. A pistol launcher can be pre-loaded with primers and safely carried. Advanced planning is required to get the primers and deterrent cartridges into remote sites. 16

Launcher Comparison Launcher Type Revolver Clip Cleaning Swing out chambered cylinder makes cleaning easy; all critical components are visible. The more complicated firing mechanism makes cleaning difficult and some disassembly is required. Capacity Five to seven shots. Six to ten shots. Reloading Slow to reload using loose primers. Faster to reload using spare preloaded clips. Determining Swing out cylinder makes it An unloaded clip launcher if loaded. easy to check if loaded, looks identical to a loaded one. Determination requires that the clip be fully ejected. 21

Banger Considerations n n n No “banger” or any other pyrotechnical device should ever be shot directly at a bear. Always alert the bear of your location prior to firing a banger. Bangers can be a fire hazard. Never shoot from inside a vehicle, whether stationary or moving. Bears can become habituated to loud noises. 26
Screamers n BEARWISE n n Makes a continuous loud screeching noise from the launcher muzzle out to approximately 83 to 100 yards. The looping flight path makes it difficult to predict where the projectile will end up. Wind can change the range or direction of the projectile. 27
Hollow end into muzzle cup BEARWISE 28
Screamer Considerations n n Always alert the bear of your location prior to firing a screamer. When firing screamers the shooter needs to compensate for the less-than predictable flight path. Screamers can be a fire hazard Never shoot from inside a vehicle, whether stationary or moving. 29
12 Gauge Shotgun Launcher 12 -gauge pump action shotgun 12 -gauge break action double barrel shotgun The 12 -gauge shotgun is the most versatile deterrent launcher. 30
12 -gauge pump action shotgun n Shotguns used for bear deterrence must have the following features: 3” chamber (s) smooth bore barrel(s) open or cylinder choke (no narrowing of the barrel at the muzzle 31
Limitations 12 -gauge pump action shotgun n n In order to use a shotgun successfully bear responders must complete firearm safety training and have a valid firearms licence. The presence of a firearm can give people a false sense of security. 32
Break-action Shotgun Action Release Safety n n n The break-action is the safest of all action types. The shooter can easily and safely check for barrel obstructions. The break-action shotgun is one of the easiest firearms to clean. 33
Armed Back-up When the 12 -gauge break-action is used to fire deterrent rounds the shooter should be backed-up by a person with a firearm loaded with lethal rounds. 34
Pump-action Shotgun Fore-end Stock or Slide n n Tubular Magazine The pump-action is the fastest manually operated action and the easiest to operate from the shoulder. The alignment of the action and the barrel makes it difficult to check for potential obstructions in the barrel. 35
Chamber BEARWISE Ejection Port ONLY…… Place deterrent rounds directly into the chamber of the shotgun, not into the magazine. Loading Port Magazine Fully load the magazine with lead slugs so that the shotgun is ready if the bear attacks. BEARWISE 36
Follow-up Deterrent Rounds Only used when pump-action shotgun is being used for firing deterrent and lethal rounds. 37
Never empty the magazine by cycling the action. Shell Latch 38
12 Gauge Shell Crackers Capabilities • Long range deterrent • Fused projectile travels approx. 66 to 86 yards (200 to 260 feet) • Produces noise level of before exploding. approximately 160 decibels. • Effective range of noise greater than projectiles range. 39
12 Gauge Shell Crackers Limitations • One year shelf life. • Subject to dangerous goods shipping regulations. • Potential fire hazard. 40
Shell Cracker Considerations • Shotgun be pointed up at an angle of forty-five degrees. • Best achieved by firing from the hip position. 41
Approx. Range of Shell Cracker = 86 yards (260 feet) Recommend ed Firing Lane Don’t Shoot Recommend ed Firing Lane NEVER AIM DIRECTLY AT A BEAR 42
Shell Cracker Considerations Always alert the bear to your location prior to firing. Can be a fire hazard. Bears can become habituated to loud noises. 43
