Approach to PXIE Cost and Schedule Development • • Developed detailed cost and schedule

Approach to PXIE Cost and Schedule Development • • Developed detailed cost and schedule estimates for prioritizing available budgets. Estimates built bottoms up from subject matter experts, subproject leaders. Base year estimate is FY 2012. Activities detailed starting FY 13. Resource Loaded Schedule (RLS) developed as a planning tool. – Primavera as scheduling tool and COBRA as cost processor • Same tools as DOE 413. 3 projects – Labor rates, escalation, overheads standardized and maintained – ~800 activities, detailed Gantt chart available with review materials – Flexible reports – Valuable for budgeting/forecasting exercises PXIE Review, Marc Kaducak 3

PXIE Staging • • • Stages defined to smooth cost distribution while retiring risks

PXIE Staging • • • Stages defined to smooth cost distribution while retiring risks in order of priority All stages developed concurrently but have different completion dates Stage 1: • Stage 2: • Stage 3: – Ion source, LEBT, prototype chopper – RFQ at full power – Full MEBT with prototype kickers, (possibly) prototype absorber, temp. dump, bunchers, diagnostics – Beam through RFQ, MEBT – Cryo system – SSR 1 CM – cold and rf powered, no beam – HWR CM – cold and rf powered, no beam – Full diagnostics line, final MEBT kickers, final 50 k. W beam dump, 1 -m. A CW beam delivered to the dump. PXIE Review, Marc Kaducak 4

PXIE and Project X Schedules • Mitigation plans for critical front end technical risks would be executed in advance of Project X, which could optimistically achieve CD-3 in FY 2017. – Note: Project X construction would likely begin with ~2. 5 year civil construction phase. SRF (aka “Project 18”)Funded Activities FY 12 here represents costs included in RLS only. Total was ~$4. 3 M. Note: Assumes SRF Funding at levels of Sep. 2012 guidance. Latest IFP has $2. 25 M reduction in SRF Related GAD funds. Still under discussion with OHEP. PXIE Review, Marc Kaducak All Costs Fully Burdened k$ (AY) 12

Summary • • • Detailed Resource Loaded Schedule developed for PXIE for use in budgeting, prioritization. Boundaries between Project X and Project 18 (SRF) funding sources defined. PXIE schedule compatible with even the most optimistic Project X schedule. Assumes modest funding increase in FY 14, larger increase in FY 15 as part of Project X ramp up. Schedule could be accelerated by at least one year with additional funding. For example, HWR procurements are “shovel ready”. Levels of effort in general have been reduced. Actively pursuing savings opportunities by decommissioning HINS and exercising collaboration with India. PXIE Review, Marc Kaducak 14
