Putting Setup Stance shoulder width Ball Position forward
Putting Setup Stance shoulder width Ball Position forward of middle Grip in palms (lifelines) with hands facing parallel Forearms same angle as putter shaft Elbows closer to body Eyes over or slightly inside target line Stroke Practice stroke whilst looking at target Gradually bringing eyes back to ball Backswing shorter than follow through Keep eyes down after ball gone for solid centre hit Mix up practice between drills and games adding on course pressure to improve routine and mental game – “you must love it to be good at it”
CHIPPING/PITCHING • Chipping and Pitching setup is basically presetting of your full swing Impact position - Weight 80 -90% on front foot • Sternum in line with ball position(ball should be forward of middle-hybrid) • If weight falls onto back foot the wrists will get involved causing a scooping action • Keep club pointing at belly button to maintain radius/width of swing (Diagram) • As shots require more distance the knees and body will move to a bigger backswing and follow through. With shorter chips the body should be quieter and arms have smaller swing. Do not try to calculate swing length as it comes down to “feeling” the distance! (Diagram) • Backswing should never be bigger than follow through – just imagine you are tossing a ball • Focus on where you would like the ball to land during for the shot - not where it is going to finish.
GRIP, POSTURE & BALL POSITION • • Feet shoulder width apart - back foot pointing straight out square - Front foot can be slightly open or square Grip – hands should be on natural angles as they would hang by your side. Top hand should see 2 -3 knuckles. Bottom hand “V” points to right ear Stand up straight and hold club with arms stretched out in front of you, grip pointing at belly button (baseball) Bend from the hips until club meets ground – Flex knees slightly – Spine angle should remain straight – Stick out your backside • This is now your distance/radius from the ball Diagram 2 Diagram 1
SET UP POSITION cont…. . • Pull your front shoulder and front hip up and around so that your whole body is aligned to target and press hands forward - this is imitating the impact position! (See Diagram 1 & 3) • Ball Position Irons - Back of ball in centre of feet (diagram 1) Hybrids - two inches forward of centre Fairways/Driver - four inches forward of centre (diagram 4) NB “Front” refers to the left side for a right hand golfer “Back” refers to the right side for a right hand golfer Diagram 3 Diagram 4
BACK SWING • • • Take your club back to the height of your hip to feel the start of your backswing - this allows you to relax your grip pressure and feel the weight of the clubhead -club shaft should be parallel to target in this “swing check “position. (Diagram 1 and 2) Go back to address position and start to coil your body weight into your back leg keeping your back leg “braced”. Head can move with body ! Front arm will remain relatively straight, but not tense and back arm will fold naturally Grip will point at Target line/Ball at midway stage of backswing. (Diagram 3) Club should maintain radius until the finish of your backswing. Try not to take the club back too far. (Diagram 4) Diagram 1 Diagram 2 Diagram 3 Diagram 4
DOWNSWING & IMPACT • • Start downswing by shifting front hip back to target (bump umbrella drill) (Diagram 1) Weight will lean into front foot and back foot will start to roll onto the inside of big toe Your position of your sternum should be over the ball at impact Arms will rotate around this front hip position in a circle Back arm will straighten into impact position (Diagram 3) Left arm will fold as you continue into follow through A balanced finish facing the target with your back foot up on its toe Diagram 1 Diagram 2 Diagram 3
FOLLOW THROUGH • • Arms will rotate around this front hip position in a circle Back arm will continue to straighten past impact and grip end will point back at belly button (Diagram 1) Left arm will fold as you continue into follow through and club will point back at ball as the swing continues to rotate on the correct plane. (Diagram 2) A balanced finish facing the target (back angle maintained) with your back foot up on its toe (Diagram 3) Diagram 1 Diagram 2 Diagram 3
BUNKERS • • • Taker a wider stance - Aim Feet 30 deg Open to Target- Open Clubface 30 deg to Target. Club will swing along feet angle and open face will send ball towards target. (Diagram 1) Keep knees braced and bent with weight into front hip. (Diagram 2) Concentrate on hitting 1” behind ball and “splash” or “explode” all the sand around ball out onto green. No excessive use of wrists – this will cause club hit too far behind ball or even miss contacting sand at all! If weight falls incorrectly onto back foot the result will be the same. Confident and aggressive focusing on the sand! Don’t get too greedy. First goal of bunker shot is to get out and anywhere on green ! Diagram 1 Diagram 2 A long bunker shot (20+ metres) needs more forward momentum could be played with a PW or even an 8 to 9 Iron provided height is not a problem. A fairway bunker requires you to attack the ball like a normal shot off the fairway. Make sure of secure footing and hit down on back of ball. Like all shots in golf – taking more loft will make your results more consistent.
