What Happens When a Church Does Not Discipline Unruly Members? Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. (1 Ths. 5: 14) But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us. (2 Ths. 3: 6) 3

1 Corinthians 5 • Sinner is emboldened to continue in sin (2 Tim. 3: 13, 5) • Sinner & his sin remains among us (1 Pet. 1: 15 -16; Eph. 5: 11) 1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles—that a man has his father’s wife! 2 And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away 4

Do you not know that a little leavens the whole lump? 7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. 8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, 7

1 Corinthians 5 • No distinction made between sinning Christian & the world (2 Ths. 3: 6, 14 -15) 10 Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person. 9

Effects of Corrective Discipline • On the world… – Gives a correct view of sin – Deters unbelievers & encourages truth-seekers • Acts 5: 13 -14 13

So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it. 14
