John Winthrop’s sermon aboard the Arbella: u The Puritans had “entered into a covenant” with God to be “as a city upon a hill. ” They believed they had been uniquely chosen to do God's special work of building a holy community.
Church, Covenant, and Conformity u Puritan : high degree of conformity: morality, order, and propriety u Calvinism: set of doctrines, which asserted the idea of predestination. u The doctrine of predestination: God decided who would achieve salvation. Nothing one did could alter one's fate, and very few would achieve eternal life.

Puritanism loses Momentum u End of 17 th century, many of colony's founders' children failed to experience the conversion that qualified them for church membership. u They could not baptize their own children u u In 1662 ministers enacted the Halfway Covenant: allowed unconverted children of the Puritan elect to become “halfway” church members who could baptize their infants but not participate in communion or have voting privileges.
