PURITANS • They lived everything off of the bible • • • Women subservient Education was highly emphasized Arranged marriages Typical puritan women had 8 children Cultural mistrust of women (Salem Witch Trials) Women were not to have any political or religious voice

QUAKERS • Also called the Society of Friends • Were pacifists, did not believe in fighting • Radical religious group arose in the 17 th century • Rejected formal theology • Focused instead on the Holy Spirit that dwelled inside of them • Reason they called the Quakers

ORIGINAL SIN VS. ORIGINAL BLESSING • Puritans believed in predestination • Belief that your life is already planned out and you are already destined to go to either heaven or hell • Quakers believe in the power of the holy spirit • Sanctification was the belief that every believer had an inner light that leads a person to God and to have a more positive outlook on humanity

ROLE OF CHURCH AND STATE • Puritans had no separation of church and state. They believed that they were called by God to establish a pure Christian state in America • Quakers allowed more religious freedom. They refuse to follow practices that were against their beliefs

VIEWS ON EQUALITY • Puritans had very traditional gender roles • Only men could be ministers and leaders • Puritans also believed that the Indians were savages • Quakers were concerned for the well-being of the Indians
