What is Puritanism? – “a religious reform movement that arose within the Church of England in the late sixteenth century” (http: //www. history. com/topics/puritanism).
The Puritans in England – As this group became dissatisfied with the Church of England, unlike other religious groups that simply broke away from the Church, Puritans sought to reform the Church in the way they thought God said it should be. – They tried this with two separate attempts and after failing, decided to separate completely as colonists to the New World.
Puritan Beliefs and Differences – God was the most righteous and sovereign of all beings (this was a strict counterpoint to Catholicism’s emphasis on priests’ holiness as opposed to the rest of the congregation). – Puritans leaned towards the Old Testament. – Puritans believed in predestination—the belief that there was a group of people already destined to be able to be saved to heaven—but only if they adhered strictly to divine law.
Puritan Beliefs and Differences – Moderation—they follow social class dress and drank, but condemned anything in excess. – They believed Puritans would create a “New Jerusalem. ” – They held a true Sabbath—all that was allowed was reading God’s word.
