Pure substance matter that always has exactly the
Pure substance – matter that always has exactly the same, uniform composition. Made of only elements & compounds! Ex. Salt, sugar, water or aluminum.
Elements – a substance that cannot be broken down into any simpler substance Ex. Copper, aluminum, gold, oxygen, +100 more (anything found on the periodic table!)
Compounds – a substance made from two or more elements chemically combined THE PROPERTIES OF A COMPOUND DIFFER THE PROPERTIES OF THE ELEMENTS IT IS MADE OF. Ex. Water is a compound made of hydrogen and oxygen + =
Mixture – a combination of two or more substances that are NOT chemically combined.
Two types of Mixtures Heterogeneous mixtures – the parts of the mixture are noticeably different Ex. Sand, mixed nuts, gold medal ribbon ice cream Homogenous mixtures – the parts of the mixture are evenly distributed and may appear to contain only one substance Ex. Stainless steel (a mixture of iron chromium and nickel) vanilla ice cream
Solutions – a homogeneous mixture in which particles of a substance separate and spread out evenly throughout a mixture. Solute – Ex. Salt substance that is dissolved in a solution Solvent – substance that the solute is dissolved in Ex. Water
Suspensions – heterogeneous mixtures that separates into layers over time; particles that do not dissolve like in a solution Ex. Sand mixed with water
Concentration – measures the amount of solute dissolved in the amount of solvent. Measured in g/m. L Solubility – the amount of solute that can dissolve in a solvent at a certain temperature temperature affects solubility
