Context The Durham County Council Index of Deprivation Report 2010 identified East Durham as being one of the most deprived areas in the county.

It is one thing to recognise the various barriers to learning that may exist and a school would be neglectful if it failed to do so. But such obstacles must not be seen as being insurmountable.

Staffing • increased staffing in core subjects of Maths and English to reduce class

A donation is requested but students who are disadvantaged are not expected to contribute. • Activities Week was introduced to widen students' experiences and was deliberately created so that disadvantaged students would be able to access all activities. • the academy has funded numerous activities to enhance curriculum provision • a careful record is maintained of all students taking part in extracurricular activities to ensure that disadvantaged students are accessing the provision available
