Pun A Literary Terms Presentation by Ms Hirsch
Pun A Literary Terms Presentation by Ms. Hirsch
When I was a wee child. . . “To be honest, with all this corn here, I feel like I’m being stalked. ” “Well, there’s a kernel of truth to what you are saying. ” “Sorry that was really corny. ” “Haha, I nearly popped I’m laughing so hard. ”
PUN: the usually humorous use of a word in such a way as to suggest two or more of its meanings or the meaning of another word similar in sound.
Examples “You have dancing shoes With nimble soles; I have a soul of lead So stake me to the ground I cannot move” (Act 1, sc 1, ln 14 -16).
Examples “Winnie the Pooh Rabbit: “Tie them together Piglet can you tie a knot? ” Piglet: “I cannot. ” Rabbit: “Uh, so you can knot? ” Piglet: “No, I cannot knot. ’”
Why do authors use it? “Apart from being witty and humorous, puns add profound meanings to texts, and shape the way in which the text is interpreted by the readers. By playing with the words, the writers reveal their cleverness and the cleverness of their characters. Besides, puns in a literary works act as a source of comic relief, or an intentional effort on the part of the writer, to show his or her creative ability in using language. ”
I could show you an example of a pun, but I wouldn’t want to pun-ish you. Are you having pun yet?
Puns are a controversial topic. . . How do puns make you feel? Do you love them or hate them? Do you have any groan-worthy pun experiences?
