THE LEGEND OF “EL COQUI” Once upon a time in a land called “Borinquen”, there lived a much adored chief named Coqui. When he fell gravely ill, the people pleaded with their gods to save their valiant leader. The gods assured the people that, because of Coqui’s goodness and kindness, he would never die. Unfortunately, life’s end came to Coqui, as it must for all mortals. Confused angry, the chief’s followers thought that the gods had not kept their promise, but the manner of the gods does not always conform to the will of humans. In order to grant eternal life, the gods gave a tiny frog a voice that forever repeated the name “Coqui”. On any afternoon in the land of “Borinquen”, now called Puerto Rico, it is possible to hear the songs of the tiny frogs, “coqui, coqui” recalling the spirit of the admired leader from long ago.
