Government The government in Puerto Rico is a Democratic Republic. They use US dollars as their currency. Their Governor is Alejandro Garcia Padilla. Their VP is Joe Biden. Their President is Barack Obama. They have citizenship in the USA, so we share Presidents and Vice Presidents.
Languages Their languages are English and Spanish. Less than 20% speak English
History of Puerto Rico In 1493 an explorer Christopher Columbus arrived in Puerto Rico. At first he named it San Juan Bautista; since the gold River was there. It was renamed to Puerto Rico, this translates into "rich port. " Since it was originally named San Juan Bautista the capital city took on the name of San Juan.
History of Puerto Rico cont. Puerto Rico began to produce tobacco, coffee, sugar cane, and cattle. This led slaves from Africa getting imported. The current Puerto Rican bloodlines have a mix of Spanish, African, and Indian races; Taino and Carib. As the years passed there were various attempts to conquer the island by the English, French, and Dutch.
History of Puerto Rico cont. 2 The Spanish created forts, that still remain today. The US Invaded Puerto Rico during the Spanish- American War. In 1898 Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. Puerto Rico gained citizenship in 1917; today Puerto Rico is a leading tourist destination/ manufacturing center.

Food A very common dish in Puerto Rico is Arroz con Gandules. A very common dish is Mofongo.
Touristy Hot-Spots The number one place to visit is Flamenco Beach in Culebra, Puerto Rico. It is a nearly waveless beach were it looks like the sky is on the ground. Old San Juan ranks number 12, it is said to be a very beautiful place. Plus it is great to go walk around and go to some of the finest restaurants.
Touristy Hot-Spots cont. The Cabo Rojo Loghthouse is number 29 and all of the reviews say that the view is beautiful and the cliffs are absolutely breathtaking. If you're planning on going be prepared for a bit of hike to get to the top of the lighthouse.
Puerto Rican Christmas in Puerto Rico starts on November 23 and doesn't end until the end of January. Parrandas, Puerto Rican caroling, is where family and friends gather together and begin to sing and surprise the sleeping family members. The Epiphany is where the children go to their relative's houses and collect the gifts of the Three Wise Men. They also celebrate a figure called Jibaro, who represents the working class, the normally wear pants, shirt, a neck tie, a hat (also called a pava), and have their machete. They also celebrate John the Baptist and fall backwards into the sea seven times to rid them of their bad luck.
