SEISMIC ATLAS OF THE "MESSINIAN SALINITY CRISIS" MARKERS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN AND BLACK SEAS – VOLUME 1 OBJECTIVES of VOL. 1 - published in 2011 n to do a synthesis of our knowledge of the seismic expression of the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) markers (offshore) n to propose a new global and consistent terminology for MSC markers n to publish a reference work that can be used by teachers and future researchers working on the MSC n to share the geological interpretation of seismic reflection data with non geophysician community Lofi J. , Déverchère J. , Gaullier V. , Gillet H. , C. PROJECT - SEISMIC ATLAS OF THE "MESSINIAN SALINITY CRISIS" MARKERS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN AND BLACK SEAS – VOLUME 2 OBJECTIVES OF THE VOLUME 2 ■ Illustrate study areas that have not been covered by the first volume; ■ Fill extension map of the Messinian marker both in the offshore and onshore domain - THIS PUBLICATION PROJECT IS OPEN TO ANYBODY WILLING TO CONTRIBUTE - 14 NEW SITES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AND SEVERAL OTHERS ARE UNDER DISCUSSION
ATLAS GUIDELINE MATERIAL TO BE PROVIDED BY THE CONTRIBUTORS 1. Several illustration sheets (minimum 2, among which the regional setting) are required, labeled as follow: o o o Regional setting (minimum requirement) MSC Surfaces MSC Units MSC Clastics any additional sheets (eg. “salt tectonics”, “fluids”, etc…). Please contact me to agree on sheet titles and material in it. The standardization process is CONSIDERABLY TIME CONSUMING in the publication process. Please use the template forms that are provided and can be downloaded at the following address: http: //johanna. lofi. free. fr/pages/MESSINIAN_ATLAS_VOL 2. htm 2. A word document with the list of the reference (reference_template. doc) 3. Raw and interpreted seismic lines for the CD-Rom (high quality jpeg). This will be required at a later stage (after reviews). If making raw jpeg files available might be a
ILLUSTRATION SHEETS 1. These sheets are grouped and labeled by study area 2. What should the sheets contain? o Regional setting: overview containing short presentation of the tectonic, sedimentary settings and architecture of the study area; data available & used; borehole description if any; location map and linedrawing on the margin - see template « page_setting » o Other sheets: MSC Surfaces, MSC Units, MSC Clastics: contain some representative seismic profiles with enlargements (zooms) to illustrate the seismic facies of the markers and their geometrical relationships; Maps ; borehole data - see template “page_surfaces” 3. MSC markers nomenclature: To help maintain consistency, each Messinian seismic marker is assigned a unique colour that is used throughout the atlas to map the marker wherever it appears in the different areas. A nomenclature has been proposed for the MSC markers (erosion surfaces and depositional units) at the scale of the Mediterranean basin. In order to be consistent with volume 1, this nomenclature should be followed If you encounter problem using the proposed labeling, please contact me 4. LEGEND: In the Vol. 1, the legend was provided on each sheet. However, in order to save some place for the text and the illustration, the legend will be given on a separated sheet. It will be common to every sheet and every study area. . – please, use the template legend provided in the file « usefull_material. ai »

NOMENCLATURE DEPOSITIONAL UNITS In the deep basin, the nomenclature is based of the depositional units is based on their seismic facies and/or the geometrical relationship of the units with respect to • the Mobile Unit (MU, mainly halite), which is generally the easiest unit to evidence on the seismic profiles thanks to its transparent facies and associated plastic deformation, producing diapirs and listric faults in the overlying sediments • We then define a Lower Unit LU below MU, and an Upper Unit UU above MU. On the margins, two other units are defined according to their acoustic facies, geometry, an spatial extent: • a Complex Unit (CU) which appears closely related to the sediment supply sources during the MSC; • a Bedded Unit (BU), observed only locally, and geometrically disconnected from the other Messinian units. SURFACES The MSC surfaces have been defined based on their relationship with the Pre-MSC units, the offshore MSC units, and the Plio-Quaternary sedimentary cover. • The Messinian units are bounded at top and bottom by a Bottom Surface (BS) and a Top Surface (TS), named BES and TES respectively where they present erosion indications. • IES are an intermediate surfaces observed within the MSC deposition units.
