PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTER The Public service broadcasting is the idea that media is broadcasted from the Government to the general public. This can be funded in a variety of ways such as license fees, public financing and governmental contributions. An good example of a media company that are a public broadcasting service is BBC. The BBC are funded by license payers, but they also outsource their work to other countries. Public service broadcasting is television that are broadcast to provide information, advice, or entertainment to the public without trying to make a profit. Ian AKILIMALI
BBC ONE ■ The BBC One is the TV channel of the British Broadcasting Corporation in the United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Channel Islands. The BBC also own other channels such as BBC Two, BBC Three and Four. They are also funded by license fee payers. ■ The Royal Charter is the constitutional basis for the BBC. It sets out the public purposes of the BBC, guarantees its independence, and outlines the duties of the Trust and the Executive Board. Whereas, the BBC Trust was the governing body of the BBC between 2007 and 2017. It was operationally independent of BBC management and external bodies, and its stated aim was to make decisions in the best interests of licence-fee payers. ■ The BBC Audience Councils are advisory bodies of the BBC Trust, they are governing body of the BBC. There are four Audience Councils for; England, Northern Ireland, Scotland Wales. ■ The Audience Councils play an important role in providing the Trust with informed insights on the views, needs and interests of audiences in their respective nations, and on how well the BBC is serving these audiences and delivering its public purposes. ■ The BBC do not broadcast advertisements like their competition ITV. This is because they are funded through television licence fee which all TV viewers in the UK are required to pay annually. This includes viewers who watch live BBC streams or catch up services of the BBC's channels online or via their mobile phone. The BBC's international television channels are also funded by advertisements and subscription. ■ The countries where BBC channels is available to air for free are Belgium and the Netherlands. COMMERCIAL broadcasting ■ Commercial broadcasters (also known as private broadcasting) are owned by private companies. They get their money by selling advertisements to make profit. In UK, for example, where commercial television has been dominant for decades, TV channels broadcast commercials every ten minutes. Commercial TV focuses on entertainment such as soap operas, dramas, game shows and reality television. Many of them have their own talk shows, where guests appear and discuss certain topics. ITV ■ ITV is a famous commercial television channel in the United Kingdom. It is a commercially funded broadcaster which means that it is financed by advertising revenue. The Channel is owned by the ITV plc. The programmes on ITV are produced by ITV Studios which is an in house production. They create and produce content in the UK and internationally, while distribution businesses such as Global Entertainment, sells finished programmes and formats worldwide. ■ ITV is widely available in Ireland on cable and MMDS, and also on Northern Ireland Wales as ITV Cymru Wales. It is also available on cable and IPTV in Switzerland Liechtenstein. ■ ITV are mainly funded by advertisements during the breaks of their programs, companies will give money to ITV, to advertise their product on the channels so more people will be aware of the product and what it does so they can make profit.
