Public Health Internship Capstone Ohio Health: Grant Medical Center Bhavneep Kaur, BSPH Environmental April, 2020 INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE KEY COMPETENCIES I completed my capstone at Grant Medical Center and spent most of my time in the Surgical and Heart Department and the Emergency Department Key activities include: • Providing emotional support to family members • Attending family needs in waiting area • Relaying surgery updates to family members • Looking up patient information and directing patients/family members to pre-operation and post-operation rooms • Communicating with nurses/physicians to place family members in consult rooms PERSONAL APPLICATION Throughout this process, I have discovered that I am very passionate about public health. I believe it is crucial for our healthcare system to focus more on primary care and prevention and to provide care for all people, regardless of their socioeconomic status. I also had the opportunity to have worked with a wide variety of individuals, underserved and privileged. It has been a great experience to see improvement in my communication and interpersonal skills, as well as gain some insight and experience in an environment that I hope to work in one day. My passion for public health has been an integral part of my decision to pursue medicine. This capstone experience has taught me a lot in terms of my ability to communicate with others, teamwork, the healthcare system, and the hospital atmosphere. I am excited to take what skills and knowledge I have gained from my capstone experience and apply it to my future aspirations.
