What is accreditation? § Development of a set of standards § A process to measure health department performance against those standards § Recognition for health departments meeting the standards § Means to identify and prioritize areas for improvement within the standards 3 3
Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) Ø Non-profit entity formed to implement and oversee national public health department accreditation. Ø Promotes and protects the health of the public by advancing the quality and performance of public health departments in the United States. Ø 44 health departments currently accredited with two in Oregon. § Marion County Health Department (3/2014) § Deschutes County Health Services (6/2014) 4 4
Why Accreditation? Ø Encourage and stimulate quality and performance improvement in a health department Ø Stimulate greater credibility, accountability and transparency Ø Increases recognition of the role of Public Health Ø Strengthens PH system from within Ø May increase access to Public Health funding Ø Improve relationships with the community 5 5

What is Quality Improvement? Ø QI is the use of a deliberate and defined process which is focused on activities that are responsive to community needs and improving population health. Ø Continuous and ongoing effort to achieve measurable improvements in the efficiency, effectiveness, performance, accountability, outcomes and other indicators of quality services or processes which achieve equity and improve the health of the community. Developed by the Accreditation Coalition Workgroup and approved by the Accreditation Coalition in June 2009 10 10
