Psychology: Unit 2: biological basis of behaviour – the brain Bellwork: Grab the paper from the table and as I pass out crayons, every group grab 5 or 6 colors Learning Target: Today we will identify the structures of the brain and their basic functions
Layers of the Brain
Lobes of the Brain Cerebral cortex n Left and Right Hemispheres n Left hemisphere for most people is the dominant hemisphere- responsible for production of language, mathematical ability, problem solving, logic n Right hemisphere thought to be responsible for creativity and spatial ability n
Frontal Lobe Located at the front of both cerebral hemispheres n Production of speech n Complex Functioning- personality, judgement, insight, reasoning, problem solving, abstract thinking and working memory n

Parietal lobe Touch and pressure n Taste n Body awareness n
Temporal Lobes Located at each side of the brain n Involved in receiving and processing auditory information , higher order visual information (recognizing faces), complex aspects of memory and language (long-term memory) n
Layers of the Brain
The Central Core and Limbic System
n 2. Thalamusn 3. Corpus Callosum – what severed in split brain operations – helps the two hemispheres work together
4. Hypothalamus- Hunger, thirst, body temperature, pleasure; regulates pituitary gland (hormones) n 5. Hippocampus- Memory, particularly the ability to turn short term memory into long term memory. Alzheimer's disease. n
6. Pituitary Gland- controls hormone glands in the body n 7. Midbrain n
n 8. Pons -Relay station between cerebrum and cerebellum n 9. Medulla- Conscious control of skeletal muscles, balance, co-ordination regulating sound impulses in the inner ear
n 10. Brainstem n 11. Spinal Cord- connects a large part of the peripheral nervous system to the brain.
n 12. Cerebellum- regulates equilibrium, muscle tone, postural control, fine movement and coordination of voluntary muscle movement.
