History of Psychiatric Nursing • Dr. William Ellis (1808) • Key advocate in forming Psychiatric nursing as a legitimate profession. • Proposed ”keepers of the insane” should be Payed higher wages to bring flocks of talented and intelligent people to psychiatry • In 1836, his Treatise on Insanity was published • Openly stated that an established nursing practice calmed depressed patients and gave “hope to the hopeless”.

Levels of Practice • Two levels of psychiatric nursing • In the most basic form, Nurses asses mental health issues and carry out a plan of action • Some may provide psychotherapy with supervision to help patients manage their medication • At the more advanced level, advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) specialize in psychiatric mental-health nursing and can carry out their own practice • May provide psychotherapy without supervision to patients • In most states, they can prescribe medication
Training and Credentials • Basic-level Psychiatric nurses • Requires a two-year program leading up to an associate’s degree in nursing • Requires a three year hospital program leading to a diploma • Requires a four-year college or university program leading to a bachelors degree
Training and Credentials • Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurses • Umbrella term for Nurse Practitioners (NP) and Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) • Require at least a master’s degree • Must meet the advanced educational and clinical requirements
